? ? ? ?Dr. Dawid Szymanowski obtained his BSc in Geology from the University of Warsaw, Poland in 2012, followed by an MSc in Earth Sciences from ETH Zurich, Switzerland in 2014. He continued his research at ETH Zurich under the supervision of Prof. Olivier Bachmann and was awarded a Doctor of Science in Earth Sciences in 2019. From 2019 to 2022, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher and Lab Manager at Princeton University, USA in the research group of Prof. Blair Schoene. Since 2022, he has been serving as a Researcher (Oberassistent) in charge of the TIMS U-Pb Geochronology Laboratory at ETH
Zurich, where he focuses on high-precision geochronology and its applications.

? ? ? High-precision U-Pb zircon geochronology finds numerous applications in providing precise constraints on the durations and rates of geological and planetary processes. Recent years have seen major improvements to this technique both in the way we can analyses zircons and in the conceptual framework used to interpret resulting dates. In this talk I will discuss some of the current technical and interpretational frontiers in the field. I will present recent work on inter-laboratory reproducibility in U-Pb geochronology (challenge), highlight a new method of controlled microsampling of zircon domains (development), and discuss what the shapes of zircon age spectra can tell us about underlying magma dynamics (opportunity).
